Recovering From lawn Burn

July 01, 20234 min read

There are a few factors that play into lawn burn. The hot sun is culprit number one, but lack of water and poor drainage can also factor into the burn.

Watering the lawn

In order for grass to stay green during the hot summer months, it needs about an inch of water. Here are some other ways you can try to help make your grass healthy and green again.

Limit Mowing
Brown grass means fragile or dormant grass which means it isn't growing. Mowing it will more trauma and pressure, so let it go as long as you can. If you have areas that need cut, or you just feel like it needs it, make sure your mower blades are nice and sharp. Dull blades can do damage and ruin the form of your grass.

Limit Traffic
Try to stay off of the areas that are brown. The less activity on the lawn, the less damage and more time to heal.

Watering
In every lawn, there will be some places that are burnt and brown and some places that are still green and growing. You cannot and should not water those areas the same.

The best time to water is in the very early morning when there is less heat and the ground has the most opportunity to absorb the water. Watering in the heat of the day provides the least amount of opportunity for the grass to absorb and benefit from the water.

Make sure that when you water, you really soak it. The water will need to go down five to six inches to reach the roots, so keep that it mind when you time your watering. Simply sprinkling will not be enough and can actually do more harm than good. If the water does not go down deep enough to reach the roots, the roots will come up looking for water, making them vulnerable to the heat and potentially killing the grass all together. A good rule of thumb is to shower the brown grass until the soil is soaked and squishy wet.

Another thing you can do is add charcoal to the burnt grass area and water it. Damp charcoal can remove and detoxify chemicals and fertilizers on the grass.

Replacement
If you prefer, you can remove the burnt grass and plant new seed, or you can have a professional lawn care service do it for you. This gives a quicker result, but the seed will take some effort as well. If you are doing it yourself, be sure to remove all of the old grass and soil and put in fresh soil and seeds. You will need to be sure to water the soil well for a few solid weeks until the seeds germinate and begin to grow. Add straw over the top of the new soil and seed to protect it and give the seeds the best opportunity to stay in place and begin to grow. The new grass will be fragile, so be sure to limit traffic until it is grown in, healthy and strong.

When planting seed, it is important to consider what type of soil you have, where you live and the overall environment. Some seeds may be marketed with fertilizer, but that is not needed for them to grow.

You also can opt for re-sod, which will just replace areas that are burnt with patches of new soil and establish grass. Please keep in mind that this will still require watering. Since this area will be vulnerable, fertilizer use is not recommended. This would be in place of planting new seed.

For extreme cases, it may be necessary to replace your lawn. If this entire lawn is burnt beyond repair, you may want to consider sod, which will give you a new lawn. This would be the last action to consider.

Your lawn is an extension of your home and a place for you and your family to enjoy. By tending to you lawn and spending time maintaining it, it will provide you with a great sense of pride and enjoyment.
